In November of 2011, the beloved Saint-Denis of Gerstheim, Alsace burnt to the ground. French artist Gérard Brand gathered relics from the rubble and created masterworks that are a part of the spiritual foundation of the rebuilt church.

When Dutch artist Jeroen Meijer shared his latest mosaic with us earlier this year, we were stunned by the depth and beauty of it.
This commemoration of his mother’s passing was so moving on so many levels, we spent a great deal of time studying it before contacting him with our many questions. He graciously answered all of them, sharing in his own words the background behind a piece that shimmers with emotional realism.

“Art of Mosaics: Piecing It Together” is a fine and robust first foray into the world of contemporary mosaic for Boston’s Fuller Craft Museum. With over 30 objects running the gamut from the familiar to the revelatory in jewelry, sculpture and wall pieces, the show also has a strong local focus.

All artists carry with them, consciously or not, the iconography of artists who preceded them. Great creators bring to their own work a personal stone, (in this case a tessera) which will allow them to enter into the history of their work and for which they will in turn become a reference. This is what Valeria Ercolani is accomplishing. She is a mosaic Master, born and educated in Ravenna, capital of mosaic, a city enriching her life since infancy with the light of Byzantine mosaics of the 5th and 6th century.
