A chance encounter in Ravenna led to several large-scale mosaic works appearing in painter Domingo Zapata’s exhibition, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, at the Pallazo da Mula Morosini on the Grand Canal during Venice’s 55th Annual Biennale.

The most exciting exhibit we saw in conjunction with the Society of American Mosaic Artist’s (SAMA) annual conference in Tacoma, WA last April was Transposition, a site-specific group show mounted at INScape – a former Immigration and National Services Building (INS). Curated by participating artists Jo Braun, Kate Jessup and Kelley Knickerbocker, Transpositions asked the 15 invited artists to consider the “liminal” nature of both the historical use of the building and the state of the mosaic medium.

In a series of installations and exhibitions that began in 2008 UK artist Cleo Mussi has created works that delight and provoke us – beguile and expose us in all our sometimes dangerously unthinking humanity. That she does so with humor, grace and a defining sense of whimsy is evidence of the loving heart that guides her intellect.

How wonderful. A venue for the Society of American Mosaic Artist’s (SAMA) annual member show, Mosaic Arts International, that is a perfect fit. Tacoma’s Museum of Glass (MOG) has all the right stuff to showcase contemporary mosaic splendidly. The internationally-known museum has the architecture and lighting to make mosaic literally and figuratively shine. More important, MOG has a natural kinship with mosaic through the medium of glass.

Nothing quite prepared us for the treasure chest/Grandma’s Attic/”extremely capacious handbag” (as one wag of the day put it) that is the Victoria and Albert Museum. Billed as “The world’s greatest museum of art and design”, the V&A is filled to the brim with vast collections of fascinating textiles, sculpture, jewelry, metalwork, glass, ceramics, furniture, painting, books, fashion – all of the things Man makes with his own two hands to make his world more beautiful and more meaningful.
