We’re back! London was full of so much that was inspirational, we’re going to just share some images here with as few words as possible. In the next few days, we’ll be reviewing highlights from the British Association for Modern Mosaic’s (BAMM) 2012 Forum and take a stroll through the treasure trove known as the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Nothing quite prepared us for the treasure chest/Grandma’s Attic/”extremely capacious handbag” (as one wag of the day put it) that is the Victoria and Albert Museum. Billed as “The world’s greatest museum of art and design”, the V&A is filled to the brim with vast collections of fascinating textiles, sculpture, jewelry, metalwork, glass, ceramics, furniture, painting, books, fashion – all of the things Man makes with his own two hands to make his world more beautiful and more meaningful.

Professor Iliya Iliev, Chief of the Department of Mural Painting, Mosaics and Stained Glass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria has been exploring the possibilities of mosaics for over 30 years. Classically trained in both art and architecture, Iliev’s mosaics exploit both of these doctrines. His work is unmistakeable; always organic, always ordered by a geometry that gives wings to his eclectic materials. We asked Iliev to answer the question: Why mosaic? Why not painting or sculpture? His response is below.
