Significant Firsts for US Mosaic Artists Pam Stratton and Sonia King

Pam Stratton "Twin Lights"
MAN 2009 artist Pam Stratton (Cape Ann, MA) is the first mosaic artist to receive the Ann Bakke Memorial Award for Excellence in any medium from the Rockport Art Association (RAA). Her work, Twin Lights (above), was selected by two well-known Rockport painters, T.M. Nicholas and Bruce Turner , as Best in Show in RAA’s annual juried Contributing Members show.

The RAA is a highly regarded arts organization, having 88 years of history in championing traditional media such as painting, graphics and sculpture in the Cape Ann area. In addition to the Award, Ms. Stratton received a $250 prize. The show can be seen in organization’s Hibbard Gallery at 12 Main Street in Rockport through August 25th. April gallery hours are Wed-Fri 10-4, Sat 10-5, Sun Noon-5. The Gallery will be closed this Easter Sunday.
Sonia King "Nebula Aqua" 2010
MAN artist and contributor Sonia King‘s Nebula Aqua was just awarded a special recognition in the 2010 International Prize for Mosaic Art and Architecture by the Exhibition Commission in Italy. It was the only non-Italian project to be recognized.
The Italian Exhibition competition is part of the Tendenza Mosaico, a huge mosaic-centric expo that we posted about in November.
The international competition encourages the connection between the architecture and mosaic in three categories: civil, religious and residential. Sponsors are the Municipality of Spilimbergo, the Province of Pordenone and the Province of Udine.
Nebula Aqua is a site-specific installation in a San Francisco residence designed by Ms. King in conjunction with architect Sean Culman of the firm Solutions. The series of ameoba-like shapes showcase the artist’s signature palette of monochromatic man-made and natural materials. A partial list of the materials used in Nebula Aqua includes glass, ceramic, paua shell, golds, smalti, turquoise, malachite, labradorite, pebbles, chrysocolla, crystals, pearls, beach glass, amazonite, stainless steel, and abalone.
